There’s a lot of noise online about what spirituality “should” look like. You might’ve seen endless rituals, routines, tools, or image-perfect practices and felt like you weren’t doing enough, or doing it right. But the truth is, spirituality often looks much quieter, more ordinary, and deeply personal.
In this piece, I explore what it really means to be spiritual—not as something to achieve, but as a way of being with yourself. These are not just ideas. They are invitations to slow down, reflect, and lead from truth.

Spirituality doesn’t mean following a set of rules
Somewhere along the way, we were taught that being spiritual meant doing certain things a certain way. That you had to meditate daily, own the “right” tools, or follow a perfect morning routine. I’ve even heard people say you need to sit in silent meditation for at least an hour to be truly connected. And while there’s nothing wrong with that practice, it’s not the only way.
What’s missing from that narrative is flexibility. Permission. The understanding that true spirituality is about connection, to yourself, to something greater, and to your values. It’s about presence, not performance. Yes, I meditate in the mornings. Yes, I have oracle cards and all the beautiful things. But not because I’m trying to tick a box. I do it because it feels right for me.
There’s no checklist for spiritual connection. There’s no linear path. You don’t become “more spiritual” by being stricter with your routine, you become more connected by listening to yourself. And that connection can be quiet. It can be messy. It can even be loud. What matters is that it’s yours.
It often begins by asking deeper questions
Spirituality doesn’t always arrive as a lightning bolt or breakthrough. Sometimes it starts with a subtle sense that there must be more. More to this life. More to you. More than the endless cycles that keep repeating. You might start seeing repeated numbers. You might feel pulled inward. You might find yourself questioning things you used to accept without thought.
This is the beginning. Not of something new, but of remembering something old. Something that was always within you. Because spirituality isn’t about adding more to your life, it’s about remembering who you’ve always been beneath the noise.
Many of us were raised to look outside ourselves for answers. To defer to parents, teachers, systems, structures. To believe that someone else knows better. But the moment we pause, reflect, and start looking inward instead of out—that’s when something shifts. That’s when we come home.
You can be spiritual and live a grounded, regular life
You don’t have to live in the forest, become a yoga teacher, or quit your job to be spiritual. You don’t have to live in a state of constant peace or bliss. You can be spiritual and watch Netflix. You can be spiritual and swear sometimes. You can be spiritual and still have moments of frustration, mess, and doubt.
Because the most spiritual moments often happen in the everyday. While making tea. On a walk. In the quiet in-between spaces. When you slow down long enough to notice what’s already here. It’s not about striving to become enlightened. It’s about being present with what is. It’s about noticing. Listening. Choosing awareness over autopilot.
I’ve practiced again and again in my own way. And I’ve found that connection, clarity, and those deeply spiritual moments often show up when I least expect them. In the middle of life. Not outside of it.
Final Reflections
Spirituality isn’t about doing it “right.” It’s about being real. About tuning in instead of performing. About choosing connection over perfection. And the more you lean into what feels true for you, the more spiritual your life becomes, not because it looks a certain way, but because it is your way.
Wherever this meets you, I hope it reminds you that spirituality doesn’t need to be hard, aesthetic, or structured. It can be simple. It can be quiet. And it can be yours.
