Episode 156

Nurturing Your Creativity

Today’s message is for anyone who’s ever said, “I’m not creative.” Whether you’re brainstorming your next business idea or just trying to figure out what’s for dinner, creativity is something we all use, and something we all have.

We just need to stop treating it like it only belongs to artists or “special” people. Because creativity isn’t a talent gifted to the chosen few. It’s a muscle, and you build it by showing up, experimenting, and being okay with messiness. This piece is about what it means to nurture your creativity, how to keep it alive with rituals, and why momentum (not perfection) is what fuels growth.

Creativity Is Not a Gift. It’s a Practice

You weren’t born knowing how to run a business, ride a bike, or make a perfect omelette. You learnt those things through practice, trial, and let’s be honest sometimes through bruises. Creativity works the same way. It’s not some magical moment of genius. It’s about showing up, getting it wrong, and trying again.

Sometimes I’ve created things and thought, “What on earth happened there?” I’ve painted over entire canvases or thrown out dinners that turned out inedible. That’s all part of it. Creativity comes when you stop trying to get it right and start letting go. Surrendering isn’t giving up. It’s releasing control. And in that space, creativity blooms.

Rituals That Activate Creative Flow

Once you own the fact that you are creative, the next step is to support that part of yourself. This is where rituals come in. Rituals are like warm-ups for your creative mind. They signal to your body and brain: “It’s time to create.” And the best part? Your ritual is yours. It doesn’t need to look like anyone else’s.

Some days, for me, it’s a cup of tea and a few minutes of journaling. Other times, it’s music and a little dance party in my office. I might apply body creams as a sensory ritual or simply hold a crystal in my hand. Whatever helps me drop into my body and anchor into presence. The key is consistency. Even on the days when creativity feels far away, especially on those days, your ritual brings you back. It doesn’t have to be elaborate. But it does need to be honest. It needs to be something that returns you to yourself.

Momentum Is the Magic (Not Perfection)

Creativity builds through motion, not waiting around for the perfect idea or a lightning bolt of inspiration. Momentum is everything. So when you’ve had a breakthrough, whether that’s organising your inbox or sketching out an idea, don’t treat that as the end. Let it be the beginning.

Ask yourself: What’s the next small step I can take?  Not the next big leap. Just one small, meaningful action. Because slumps will come. That’s normal. Creativity, like business, is never a straight line. It’s a full-on roller coaster. So when you hit a dip, don’t wait for clarity. Go back to your ritual. Anchor yourself. Show up, even when it feels messy or underwhelming.

Celebrate the Small Wins

I talk about this all the time: celebrate everything. Creativity loves joy. It grows in it.

So celebrate:

  • Writing a single sentence in your blog
  • Sketching out a rough idea
  • Brainstorming a name for a new offer
  • Organising your digital space in a new way

Every one of those moments counts. Every one of them is a seed. And while you may not see the blooms right away, they are happening. Just like roots growing underground. Just like vegetables growing before you see them above the soil.

Final Thoughts

Creativity isn’t about talent. It’s about permission. It’s not about waiting for the perfect time. It’s about showing up, imperfectly, honestly, and with heart. And the more you nurture your creative self through rituals, small steps, and grace, the more natural it becomes. You don’t have to be inspired. You just have to begin. Because creativity doesn’t need you to be perfect.

It just needs you to be present.
