We often think of the inner child as something abstract or symbolic, but it’s more than that. It’s an energetic part of us that lives within our body, within our energy field. And one of the places that child lives most strongly is in the Root Base Chakra.
The Root base Chakra sits at the base of your spine. It holds your sense of safety, stability, and basic survival needs, your foundation. When we explore the inner child through this lens, we begin to understand why so many of our beliefs, behaviours, and fears are grounded in childhood experiences.
I want to share what it means to reconnect with your inner child, why this work belongs in the Root Base Chakra, and how you can begin building a relationship that supports not just healing, but safety, sovereignty, and strength.

Understanding the Inner Child as Energy
Your inner child isn’t just a memory or a mindset. It’s energy. And that energy is shaped by whatever experiences you’ve had, trauma, joy, confusion, connection. None of it has to be extreme. If it impacts you, it matters. And that’s enough.
Too often, people dismiss their own experiences because “someone else had it worse.” But trauma is personal. If it shaped your nervous system, if it impacted your sense of safety, then it lives within you. And your inner child remembers.
Working with this part of you begins by acknowledging that it exists. That it’s real. That it deserves to be seen and heard.
Why the Root Base Chakra Matters
When we talk about safety and security, we’re talking root chakra. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs puts physical needs, like food, shelter, and safety, at the very base. That’s Root Base Chakra energy. And your inner child formed inside that foundation.
If you didn’t feel safe as a child, your Root Base Chakra carries that. If you weren’t sure where love or comfort was coming from, it shows up here. And those patterns don’t just fade. They become part of how you operate, until you choose to work with them intentionally.
This work is grounding. It’s not always glamorous. But it’s essential. Because when your inner child feels safe in the Root Base Chakra, you feel stronger everywhere else.
Simple Ways to Reconnect With Your Inner Child
You don’t need elaborate rituals to begin. Your intention is the most powerful thing. And there are so many gentle ways to connect with your inner child such as:
- Go for a walk and invite your inner child along, talk to them as if they’re beside you.
- Sit in meditation and visualise your Root Base Chakra. Imagine your inner child there. Ask what they need.
- Write a letter to your inner child, then write one back, from the you of today.
- Use a symbol, like a small toy or object, to represent your inner child and keep it nearby.
- Let your inner child choose something for you, maybe a meal, an activity, a colour to wear. Let them feel included.
None of this is about perfection. It’s about presence. The more consistently you check in, the more safety you create. And that safety allows healing to happen on a deeper level.
Inner Child First, Shadow Work Second
One of the most important things I’ve learned is this. Don’t jump into shadow work until your inner child feels safe. Shadow work, unpacking the beliefs, habits, and wounds that hold you back, can be powerful. But if your inner child isn’t supported, it can retraumatise instead of heal.
That’s why I always do inner child work first. I make sure she has what she needs. I let her know she’s protected. And only then do I explore the patterns, the memories, the pieces that need light.
This is how you build emotional resilience. Not by pushing through, but by caring deeply for the parts of you that were never shown how.
Let Your Inner Child Rest While You Work
Your inner child is not meant to run your business. She’s not meant to be on sales calls, in your inbox, or making decisions. That’s not her job. Her job is to play. To rest. To feel safe.
I often visualise my inner child going into a little room in the Root Base Chakra, a space she can lock from the inside when she needs protection. And while I work, she’s there. Safe. Secure. Waiting for me to come back when it’s time to play.
This boundary is important. Because when you blur those roles, you bring emotional reactivity into your work. You might take things personally. You might freeze when something goes wrong. That’s not failure, it’s your inner child calling for support.
So give her what she needs. Then return to your business with clarity and steadiness.
Final Reflections
Working with your inner child is not a one-time exercise. It’s an ongoing relationship. One that can be beautiful, playful, and profoundly healing.
Start in the Root Base Chakra. Give your inner child what they never had, safety, presence, consistency. Let them rest while you lead. And when the work is done, meet them again. Play. Connect. Create a new story together.
Because the more love you give to your inner child, the more love you bring into every part of your life.
